A Christmas Carol is a timeless classic by Charles Dickens from 1843 that redefined the way we celebrate Christmas today. The main character is Ebenezer Scrooge, a stingy and bitter old man who despises Christmas, considering it "foolishness" (Humbug!). On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his deceased partner Jacob Marley, and then by the three ghosts of Christmas (Past, Present and Future). They show him where his selfishness and lack of empathy are leading him. The story is a powerful critique of Victorian society and social injustice, but at its core it carries a message of hope - it is never too late for change, generosity and compassion for others. This work is so popular that it has seen hundreds of adaptations, from stage plays to legendary film versions such as those with Michael Caine (The Muppet Christmas Carol) or the animated film with Jim Carrey. Illustrated by Quentin Blake.
