The author, who works the ITV current affairs programme TV Eye, was one of the reporters who brought the Ethiopian famine to British television screens in October 1984. He subsequently returned to Africa to examine the conduct of aid institutions whose task it was to prevent mass starvation. The book is based on the documentation of these agencies and on extensive interviews with their key personnel. It describes the background to the Ethiopian famine and brings to light the tardiness and inadequacy of the Western response.
