With artist's signature. "From a Distance" is an acclaimed series of photography projects and a monograph by Croatian photographer Hassan Abdelghani. The project focuses on the relationship between life and death through the documentation of weathered ceramic oval portraits found on gravestones. Abdelghani captures these "portraits of portraits," exploring the "living city" found within the "city of the dead". The project uses the photographic distance to re-examine faces of the long-deceased, often from historical necropolises like the Navy Cemetery in Pula. The series won the first prize for best artistic concept at the Rovinj Photo Days in 2012. Hassan Abdelghani (born 1965 in Osijek) is a professional photographer based in Pula, where he also manages the Makina Gallery. He is well-known for his work as a film still photographer and as a coordinator for major Croatian film festivals, including the Pula and Sarajevo Film Festivals. Foreward has been written paralel in Croatian and English.
