The Flying Saucers Have Landed (1953) is one of the most influential books in the history of ufology, which launched the phenomenon of "contactees". The authors are British writer Desmond Leslie and Polish-American ufologist George Adamski. The book is divided into two main parts: 1. Historical and Theoretical Framework (Desmond Leslie) The bulk of the book was written by Desmond Leslie. He explores the history of UFOs through ancient texts, especially the Indian Vedic scriptures which mention flying machines called Vimanas. Leslie claims that extraterrestrials have been visiting Earth for thousands of years and have influenced the development of ancient civilizations, which is considered a precursor to the "ancient astronaut" theories. 2. Encounter in the Desert (George Adamski) The second, shorter part of the book contains Adamski's personal testimony about an encounter with an alien: Date and location: November 20, 1952 in the Colorado Desert, California. Alien "Orthon": Adamski claims to have met a being from Venus named Orthon. He described him as humanoid, "Nordic" in appearance, with long blond hair and a friendly face. Message: Communicating through telepathy and gestures, Orthon allegedly warned humanity of the dangers of nuclear weapons and radiation that could threaten other planets as well. Evidence: The book contains numerous photographs of aircraft that Adamski allegedly took with his telescope, including the famous "scout ship" photograph. Regardless of the truth of the claims, the book has permanently shaped popular culture and the image of benevolent "space brothers" coming to save Earth.
