The Growth of a Nation is a book by Emerson M. Brooks, first published in 1956. Subtitled "A Pictorial Review of the United States of America from Colonial Days to the Present" it provides an illustrated history of the U.S. using approximately 300 photographs and maps. Emerson M. Brooks (1905–1982) was an agricultural statistician and historian for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The book originated from handmade picture albums Brooks created to introduce international visitors to American history and culture during his 38-year career at the USDA. Upon its release, thousands of copies were distributed globally by the U.S. State Department and other government agencies as an educational tool for international program participants. The work covers the development of the United States from its colonial foundations through the mid-20th century.
