Author Kurt Landsberger's book is considered one of the most important and comprehensive biographies dedicated to the first official world chess champion. Kurt Landsberger was the great-grandson of William Steinitz himself (born in Prague under the surname Steinitz), which gave him access to unique family insights and documents. The biography draws heavily on Steinitz's own notes, letters and extensive historical research, providing a detailed account of the champion's private life and his genius outside of chess. The book contains detailed analyses and commentary for 15 selected key games prepared by renowned modern grandmaster Andy Soltis, with additions of Steinitz's own observations. Three additional illustrated games are also included. In addition to Soltis, the renowned chess historians Kenneth Whyld and David Hooper participated in the creation of accompanying historical and theoretical chapters. William Steinitz (1836–1900), born in Prague as Wilhelm Steinitz, was an Austrian-American chess player who reigned as the first official world champion from 1886 to 1894. Also known as the "Father of Modern Chess", Steinitz revolutionized the game by transforming it from a romantic, exclusively attacking style to a scientific, positional discipline based on the accumulation of small advantages and solid defense.
