Angels & Demons is the first novel in Dan Brown's Robert Langdon series, published in 2000. The story follows Robert Langdon as he is summoned to a Swiss research facility after a prominent physicist is brutally murdered and branded with a mysterious symbol. He identifies the symbol as that of the Illuminati, a secret brotherhood presumed extinct for 400 years. The plot quickly moves to the Vatican, where the College of Cardinals is assembling to elect a new Pope. Langdon joins forces with a mysterious Italian scientist, Vittoria Vetra, in a frantic race against time to prevent the Illuminati from destroying Vatican City with a hidden antimatter bomb. Their desperate hunt for the bomb and the kidnapped cardinals leads them on a trail of ancient symbols through Rome's sealed crypts, catacombs, and churches, following the "path of illumination" to the long-forgotten Illuminati lair. The novel explores the conflict between science and religion, historical intrigue, and art, such as works by Bernini and Michelangelo.
