Bhagavad-gita As It Is is a translation and commentary on the ancient Indian sacred text Bhagavad Gita by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). First published in 1968, this book has become the best-selling and most translated edition of the Gita in the West and a key text of the Hare Krishna movement. The author emphasizes that the text is presented "as is," without philosophical speculation or metaphorical interpretations that would diminish the original message. Each verse contains the original Sanskrit text (Devanagari script), a Roman transliteration, a word-for-word translation, a complete verse translation, and a detailed interpretation (called the purport or purport). The commentary is written from the perspective of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, which advocates bhakti-yoga (the path of devotional service and love of God).
