A 1998 book by Paul Ormerod offers a completely different view of how the economy works. Ormerod claims that the economy is more like a living organism than a machine. He rejects the old rule that people always make perfectly rational decisions all by themselves. Instead, it shows that people are constantly talking, looking at each other and learning, which creates chain reactions in society. The title of the book comes from the well-known "butterfly effect" from chaos theory. This means that small and seemingly insignificant events can trigger huge changes in the market. Classical economists think that we buy things looking only at cost and benefit. Ormerod says that we actually buy things because our friends do or because it's fashionable at the moment. The market is constantly changing, learning and adapting. That is why he behaves unpredictably and is often on the very edge of chaos. Because people are unpredictable, big forecasts from governments and banks are almost never accurate in the long run. The author uses the behavior of ants to explain the behavior of companies. When ants are looking for food, they follow each other, and managers do the same when making business decisions. To prove his claims, the author cites interesting examples: Market losers: Why did expensive and acclaimed films sometimes fail in theaters, while cheap and unusual films became huge hits? Technology wars: Why did the inferior VHS technology defeat the superior Betamax video recording system? The answer lies in the fact that people copy the behavior of others, and this creates an avalanche that no one can accurately predict.
