Donald A. Mackenzie (1873–1936), a Scottish journalist and folklorist, is the author of Myths of Crete and Pre-Hellenic Europe. First published in 1917, this book explores the myths, legends, and archaeological discoveries of the ancient Cretan civilization and its pre-Hellenic neighbors. The book deals with the rise of civilization on Crete (the Minoan civilization) and its influence on early Europe. Mackenzie analyzes religious practices, such as the worship of the mother goddess (in the forms of the snake goddess and the dove goddess) and the importance of animals such as bulls in rituals. The author draws on the great discoveries of the time by Heinrich Schliemann (Troy, Mycenae) and Sir Arthur Evans (the palace at Knossos). Interestingly, Mackenzie also recounts the story of Crete as the "lost Atlantis," which was a popular theory at the time.
