This is a collection of short, often comedic and satiric, stories and dialogues intended to be read or discussed during or after meals, not actual physical dining wares. The Renaissance Society of America (RSA) co-published a specific English translation of this work in 1987. The collection is an innovative and experimental work that mixes literary genres and covers a wide range of topics translated by by David Marsh. The stories and dialogues offer commentary on the cultural illusions and moral myths of Alberti's day, covering topics such as moral philosophy, politics, religion, the arts, money-making, love, and friendship. They were designed to provide "food for the mind" and witty conversation between courses, much like an intermission in a play. The English translation was published as part of a collaboration between Medieval & Renaissance Texts & Studies and The Renaissance Society of America (Renaissance Texts Series, vol. 9) in 1987.
