East of Eden, a 1952 masterpiece by American author John Steinbeck, was considered by the author to be his most important work and "the only real book" he ever wrote. It is an epic family saga set in the Salinas Valley in California, which explores the fundamental human dilemmas of good and evil through the generations of the Trask and Hamilton families. The novel is a modern reinterpretation of the Book of Genesis, with a particular emphasis on the story of Cain and Abel. The plot follows Adam Trask, his brother Charles, and Adam's twin sons, Cal and Aaron, as they repeat the cycle of rivalry and the search for a father's love. Cathy Ames (Kate) is one of the most notorious female characters in literature, the embodiment of pure evil that destroys everything around her. The Hamilton family is based on Steinbeck's real-life mother's family, introducing autobiographical elements into the story. The book experienced a huge surge in popularity in 2003 after Oprah Winfrey included it in her book club. Steinbeck wrote the novel as a gift to his sons, wanting to describe in detail the smells, sounds and sights of the Salinas Valley where he grew up.
