Erotica Universalis is a comprehensive monograph by Gilles Néret, published by the renowned publishing house TASCHEN. The book presents a visual history of erotic art, exploring how artists and writers have interpreted human sexuality and fantasies throughout the centuries. The work traces the development of erotica from prehistoric cave paintings and the art of ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, all the way to the modern era. It includes works by such greats as Rembrandt, Courbet, Degas, Picasso, Dalí, Rodin, Matisse, and many others. In addition to the visual arts, the book also touches on erotic texts by writers such as Ovid, Voltaire, Verlaine, and Maupassant. The book is multilingual (English, French, German). Gilles Néret (1933–2005) was a prominent art historian, journalist, and writer. He was the winner of the Élie Faure Prize in 1981. The book is often described as a "feast for the eyes" that brings to light works that throughout history have often been hidden in private libraries or museum depots due to censorship and social taboos.
