Japanese Fairy Tales (1910) is a famous collection of folk tales and legends collected and retold by Grace James. The book is best known for its lavish watercolor illustrations by the master of the golden age of illustration, Warwick Goble. James, who was born in Tokyo, drew inspiration from her memories of her childhood spent in Japan, as well as from classic texts such as the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters). The collection contains 38 stories, including titles like "Green Willow," "The Moon Maiden," "The Peony Lantern," and "Urashima." The stories are written in lyrical and poetic prose, often mixing fantasy with elements of supernatural terror or moral lessons. The most famous stories in the collection: Green Willow: The story of a young samurai who must choose between his mission and his love for a mysterious woman who is the willow spirit. The Moon Maiden: Legend of a celestial being whose feather cloak is stolen by a fisherman, preventing her from returning to the sky. Urashima: A famous legend about a fisherman who visits the Dragon Palace under the sea, only to return home to find that centuries have passed. The Peony Lantern: A chilling tale of love between a living man and the ghost of a deceased woman.
