This is a book by British historian Ian Wilson that explores the historical foundations of Jesus' life, miracles, and the rise of early Christianity using archaeological evidence and textual analysis. Wilson, best known for his research on the Shroud of Turin, seeks to separate the "historical Jesus" from later church doctrines. Wilson's approach is often described as skeptical of traditional church accounts, but acknowledges the historical existence of Jesus. Wilson points to numerous contradictions within the New Testament texts, such as differences in descriptions of Jesus' birth, resurrection, and geographical details. He argues that the gospels were not written by the apostles, but by anonymous authors decades after the events described. One of the most controversial parts of the book is Wilson's suggestion that Jesus may have used some form of hypnosis or suggestion to perform miracles of healing or induce visions in his followers after his death. The author argues that there is no direct evidence in the New Testament that Jesus personally claimed to be God. He believes that the doctrine of Jesus' divinity was not formally established until the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD under the influence of Emperor Constantine. The book includes analyses of discoveries such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Galilean fishing boat, and the probable tomb of Caiaphas to reconstruct the world in which Jesus lived. Theologians and Christian research institutes have criticized Wilson for ignoring centuries of biblical scholarship that, according to them, resolves the alleged contradictions.
