This is a key collection of primary sources, edited by Margit Rowell, art historian and respected curator and expert on Miró's work, and provides extensive insight into the inner world, creative process and philosophy of the famous Catalan surrealist. The French texts were translated by the famous American writer Paul Auster, while the translations from Spanish and Catalan were done by Patricia Mathews. The content is organized chronologically, covering almost seven decades of the artist's work. The book offers an intimate portrait of the artist through his own words. It consists of: Notebooks and Sketches - Miró's private writings on art theory, poetry and ideas for paintings. Letters - correspondence with family, friends and key figures of the avant-garde such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Ernest Hemingway. Interviews - conversations in which Miró explains in detail his specific relationship with the subconscious, automatic writing and rejection of conventional painting. Critical notes - detailed comments and clarifications by Margit Rowell that help the reader place the texts in historical context. This is an unabridged republication of the first edition published in 1986.
