This is the first full-scale study in any language of the political career of Karl Radek (1885–1939), one of the most controversial and intriguing figures in the Marxist movement. The monograph provides an in-depth and precisely documented analysis of Radek's life as a brilliant revolutionary propagandist, polemicist, tactician, and journalist who is remembered for his biting sarcasm, wit, and absolute dedication to the idea of an international socialist revolution. The author traces in detail his life journey without a national affiliation, moving from his early days in Polish socialism, through stormy years within German Social Democracy, up to his key recruitment into Bolshevism after the Russian Revolution of 1917 and his entry into the highest ranks of the Communist International (Comintern). The particular value of this historical study lies in its meticulous research into Radek's complex relations with key mentors and comrades of the era, including revolutionaries such as Warszawski, Rosa Luxemburg, Lenin, Trotsky, and ultimately Stalin. Lerner skillfully portrays the tragic epilogue to Radek's dynamic career in the final decade of his life, when the internationalism that had been his hallmark was brutally buried under the weight of Stalin's doctrine of "socialism in one country." The book harrowingly documents the period after 1929, which culminated in Radek's arrest, downfall, and liquidation in Stalin's purges of the "old Bolsheviks." Equipped with highly valuable archival and documentary photographs, the monograph represents essential reading for historians, Cold War researchers, political scientists, and students of the history of the Soviet Union and early communism.
