“Leonardo da Vinci: The Artist” is a classic monograph by art historian and co-founder of Phaidon Press, Ludwig Goldscheider, first published in 1943. The book is regarded as one of the most accessible and comprehensive works that combines Leonardo’s artistic oeuvre with historical documents from his time. The book contains around 200 illustrations (mostly black and white, with a smaller number of color plates) that detail Vinci’s paintings, anatomical drawings, and machine designs. Of particular value are the included letters and documents from Leonardo himself, as well as the famous biography written about him by Renaissance biographer Giorgio Vasari. Goldscheider analyzes the authenticity and context of the creation of individual works through expert commentary and explanations. Ludwig Goldscheider (1896–1973) was a prominent Austrian-British art historian whose monographs on Michelangelo and Rodin shaped modern literature on the Renaissance. Unpaginated.
