An influential book by British-American author and social policy expert Richard V. Reeves. The book details how boys and men today face serious problems in education, the job market, and within the family. The author emphasizes that these problems are not a sign of psychological breakdown, but the result of profound social changes that institutions have failed to respond to. In the book, Reeves highlights key areas in which boys and men are systematically falling behind. Boys achieve lower grades than girls and are significantly less likely to enroll in or graduate from college. The education system is structured in a way that unconsciously disadvantages boys, because their brains and self-control skills develop more slowly than girls of the same age. Due to the shift from manual jobs to jobs that require cognitive and communication skills, many men have been left unemployed. Wages for most average male workers in the United States are lower in real terms today than they were in 1979. As women have become economically independent, the traditional role of men as the sole "breadwinner" has disappeared. Many fathers feel distant from their children after divorce and lose their strong social role. In contrast to political debates that often blame feminism or completely ignore men's problems, Reeves proposes that boys start primary school a year later than girls in order to give them a chance to catch up in neurological development. He calls for the employment of more men in the health, education, administration and literacy sectors. He particularly emphasizes the need for more male teachers in schools. He advocates strengthening the role of fathers as direct caregivers for children, regardless of whether they live in a classic nuclear family or not. The book ultimately conveys that helping boys and men does not mean giving up on women's equality, but is a necessary step towards a healthier and more stable society for all
