These two books form the heart of the African memoirs of Danish author Karen Blixen, also known by her pen name Isak Dinesen. Although written twenty-three years apart, they complement each other, creating one of the most striking literary images of colonial Kenya. Out of Africa (1937) is a classic that offers a lyrical and nostalgic account of Blixen's life (1914–1931) on a coffee plantation at the foot of the Ngong Hills, near Nairobi. The book is not a strict diary, but a series of evocative vignettes that celebrate the African landscape and people. The key themes are loss, fate, and a deep connection with nature. The book ends with her return to Denmark after the failure of the farm and the death of Finch Hatton. Shadows on the Grass (1960), published towards the end of her life, serves as a kind of "code" or final chapter to her African memories. It consists of four stories that deepen the portraits of the people she knew in Africa. Written thirty years apart, the book focuses less on the landscape and more on the human values ??and spiritual connection that has survived despite age and distance. The cult film Out of Africa (1985) starring Sydney Pollack, Meryl Streep and Robert Redford is based on both of these books, as well as on the author's biographies.
