This is a work by British author George Ryley Scott, first published in 1941. The book is a comprehensive anthropological study that explores the historical connection between human sexuality and religious rituals. Scott argues in the book that "the study of phallicism is the study of religion." The main highlights of the work include: The Origins of Phallicism: An analysis of the worship of the sun, moon, and nature as the roots of phallic beliefs. Symbolism and Ritual: An exploration of the worship of the male sexual organ (phallus) and its connection to snake worship and witchcraft. Historical and Cultural Coverage: The study covers a wide range of societies, from ancient civilizations and the cult of Priapus to the sensual religions of the East. Sexual Promiscuity: An analysis of the influence of phallic factors on historical views of sexual freedom. Due to the social norms of the time, the book had a specific path to the reader. The first edition from 1941 was privately printed in only 775 copies, intended exclusively for subscribers. Sales were initially strictly limited to members of the medical and legal professions, anthropologists, psychologists and students of comparative religion. The first widely available edition appeared only in 1966 through the publisher Luxor Press, and later popular editions followed. The book is richly illustrated with panels and vignettes that visually accompany the narrative about the influence of phallicism throughout history. Scott was otherwise known for works on the subject of human sexuality, including the history of prostitution and corporal punishment.
