The Platform is a controversial novel by the French writer Michel Houellebecq published in 2001. It is considered one of his most significant works in which he explores the topics of globalization, sex tourism and Islamic extremism. The main character is Michel Renault, an alienated French civil servant who lives a life without passion or real meaning. After his father's death, Michel goes on a package deal to Thailand where he meets Valérie, a director at a travel agency. Together with Valérie and her colleague Jean-Yves, Michel designs a new business model for the hotel chain - sex tourism as a legal and organized offer for Westerners. The novel culminates in a terrorist attack by Islamic fundamentalists on their resort in Thailand... Because of the main character's statements about Islam in the novel, as well as the author's statements during a promotional tour, Houellebecq was accused of inciting racial hatred, but was eventually acquitted. The novel provides a brutally honest analysis of modern Western society, portraying people as beings trapped in materialism and devoid of deep emotional connections. Houellebecq uses a mixture of satirical humor, explicit erotic descriptions and cold sociological analysis. Translated from the French by Frank Wynne.
