Richard III is one of William Shakespeare's most famous historical plays, probably written between 1592 and 1594. The play concludes Shakespeare's first tetralogy of the Wars of the Roses and depicts the Machiavellian rise to power and brief reign of King Richard III. Shakespeare portrays Richard III as a physically deformed "villain" (hunchback) who is determined to seize the throne at any cost. Famous quotes: "Now is the winter of our discontent" – Richard's opening line announcing his dark intentions. "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!" – Richard's desperate cry at the moment of defeat on the battlefield. Richard manipulates the nobility, imprisons and murders his own brothers (Clarence) and nephews ("The Princes in the Tower") in order to seize the crown. His tyranny ends at the Battle of Bosworth (1485), where he is killed by Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond (later King Henry VII), thus beginning the Tudor dynasty. Shakespeare's version of Richard III. it relied heavily on Tudor propaganda (especially the writings of Thomas More) which sought to denigrate the last Plantagenet king in order to make Tudor legitimation stronger.
