This is a significant book by the Russian painter, researcher and philosopher Nicholas Roerich, published after his legendary expedition through Central Asia (1925–1928). The book is not just a travelogue, but a spiritual manifesto in which Roerich explores the legend of Shambhala as a real but also a metaphysical place that heralds a new era of enlightened consciousness. Roerich describes Shambhala as "heaven on earth" which is often equated with Shangri-la in Western mythology. For him, she is a source of ancient wisdom and a symbol of the coming age of peace. The author records his experiences in Tibet, the Himalayas and the Gobi desert, combining diary entries with local legends, parables and rock engravings he encountered. Roerich believed that Shambhala is not achieved without effort, but through "the noblest and most intense activity" and peace through culture. The book offers insight into Roerich's vision of the unity of world religions and art as a means for the upliftment of humanity.
