Hayward argues that the Luftwaffe was fundamentally misused by Adolf Hitler and the High Command. Rather than being deployed as a strategic asset, it was increasingly strained to act as "flying artillery" to support bogged-down ground forces. While this tactical doctrine yielded massive successes early in the campaign (such as during the sieges of Sevastopol and Kerch on the Crimean peninsula), it ultimately broke the back of the German air fleet. The book provides a meticulous account of Wolfram von Richthofen, the commander of Luftflotte 4, who repeatedly warned that the Luftwaffe could not simultaneously support a dual drive into both the Caucasus and Stalingrad, let alone maintain the doomed Stalingrad airlift after the 6th Army was encircled. The first leaf was affected by water.
