"Teatro di poesia" (poetic theatre) defines the innovative operatic collaboration between the Istrian composer Antonio Smareglia (1854–1929) and the Triestine writer and journalist Silvio Benco (1874–1949). This artistic partnership forms the central focus of musicologist Juliana Ličinić van Walstijn’s authoritative book, “Teatro di poesia” in the Opera House: The Collaboration of Antonio Smareglia and Silvio Benco. Rejecting the mainstream verismo trends popularized by contemporaries like Giacomo Puccini, Smareglia and Benco fused poetry and music into a highly atmospheric, symbolist idiom.
