A celebrated biographical novel about the life of Michelangelo Buonarroti, published in 1961 by the American writer Irving Stone. The book chronicles Michelangelo's life in detail—from his childhood and apprenticeship in Florence to his death in Rome—spanning more than 80 years of Renaissance history. Stone lived in Italy for years, working in quarries and learning to carve marble, in order to authentically convey Michelangelo's experience. The narrative relies heavily on 495 letters written by Michelangelo, which the author had translated from Italian. The book depicts his complex relationships with the Medici family, Leonardo da Vinci, and a succession of popes who served as his patrons. The novel explores the genius artist's extreme creative highs ("ecstasy") and his profound personal and political lows ("agony"). Parts of this expansive novel were adapted into a 1965 Hollywood film of the same name, starring Charlton Heston as Michelangelo and Rex Harrison as Pope Julius II. The film focuses primarily on the long and tumultuous conflict surrounding the painting of the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
