Harry C. Triandis's "The Analysis of Subjective Culture" is a foundational text in cross-cultural psychology that defines subjective culture as a group's shared perceptions, attitudes, norms, and values, which shape their "theory" of the environment. The book, published in 1972, uses comparative studies to analyze how these cultural elements are structured and function, and the methodological challenges in studying them. It introduces concepts like cultural syndromes such as individualism and collectivism, and applies these ideas to practical areas like understanding stereotypes and developing cross-cultural training. Harry Charalambos Triandis was Professor Emeritus at the Department of Psychology of the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. He was considered a pioneer of cross-cultural psychology and his research focused on the cognitive aspects of attitudes, norms, roles and values in different cultures.
