"The Cultures of Prehistoric Egypt" is an important scholarly work written by the German-British Egyptologist Elise Jenny Baumgartel. The first volume of this book was published in 1947 by Oxford University Press for the prestigious Griffith Institute, Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The book is considered a key work for the study of the Predynastic period of Egypt. The author analyzed actual objects from museums rather than relying on later written texts. Much of the work is based on the famous Petrie collection at University College London. Baumgartel challenged the old theories that Egyptian civilization began in the north in the Nile Delta. She proved that the main roots came from the south, from Upper Egypt. She also emphasized influences from Asia. The first volume from 1947 describes in detail early pottery, ceramics and stone vessels. It contains 122 pages of text and 13 plates with illustrations.
