The book by Australian author Paul Brickhill is a timeless classic of war literature and one of the most thrilling memoir accounts from World War II. Based on true events from March 1944, the book delivers an authentic, first-hand testimony of the mass escape of Allied airmen from the strictly guarded German prisoner-of-war camp Stalag Luft III. Since the author himself was a prisoner of the aforementioned camp and a direct participant in the preparations, the narrative is characterized by exceptional detail, credibility, and documentary precision. With incredible suspense, the text describes the fascinating organization, the painstaking digging of three legendary tunnels (Tom, Dick, and Harry), as well as the unbroken team spirit and ingenuity of the prisoners who, despite constant guard surveillance, managed to pull off one of the most daring exploits in the history of warfare. This edition is also equipped with original drawings and sketches by Ley Kenyon that visually accompany and thoroughly explain the technical aspects of the plan and the layout of the camp facilities, giving the book additional documentary value. Based on this literary blueprint, the iconic Hollywood film of the same name was made in 1963, starring Steve McQueen. Since the book has never been translated into Croatian, this original edition is a unique opportunity for domestic readers to experience this authentic story.
