"The King" is a 1990 posthumous novel by the American postmodernist writer Donald Barthelme, which transports King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table to the backdrop of World War II Britain. The novel uses anachronism and satire to explore themes of chivalry, modern warfare, and the absurdity of the human condition. In The King, Barthelme reimagines the Arthurian legend within the context of the Battle of Britain, right after the fall of Dunkirk. The novel, told in a series of short, unnumbered chapters, juxtaposes medieval ideals of honor with the harsh, mechanized reality and propaganda of modern warfare. Illustrated by Barry Moser. Withdrawn from the library.
