The book written by Saint Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović is one of the most significant modern works about the first Serbian archbishop and educator. Written in a simple but profound style, the book combines historical facts with the author's spiritual meditations on the significance of Sava's works for the Serbian people and Orthodoxy as a whole. The book follows the life of Prince Rastko Nemanjić from his birth (1173), his flight to the Holy Mountain, the founding of the Hilandar monastery with his father Stefan Nemanja, until his death in Trnovo (1236). The work consists of short chapters that describe specific events, such as the reconciliation of the brothers over the father's powers, the acquisition of autocephaly of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1219, and the journey to the Holy Land. Nikolaj Velimirović emphasizes Sava's role as a "spiritual enlightener" who united the national church with universal Orthodoxy, promoting the spirit of ecumenical Christianity imbued with love for all people. Among the chapters, topics such as "Brother against brother", "Archbishop of Sava", "Council in Žiča" and "Flame of the bonfire" (referring to the later burning of his remains) stand out. Saint Nikolaj Velimirović (1880–1956) was the Bishop of Žič and Ohrid, known as the "New Chrysostom" for his eloquence. He wrote the book using medieval sources (such as the biographers Domentian and Theodosius), but adapted them for a modern reader in order to convey the atmosphere and moral strength of Sava's time. Introduction by Veselin Kesich.
