This is a cult political thriller (1972) by English author Frederick Forsyth. Set in 1963, the story follows a young German journalist who attempts to uncover a secret network of former SS members. The main character is Peter Miller, a hard-working freelance journalist from Hamburg. Miller comes into possession of the diary of Salomon Tauber, a Jewish concentration camp survivor who committed suicide. The main villain is Eduard Roschmann, a real-life historical figure and the infamous commandant of the Riga concentration camp, known as the "Butcher of Riga". ODESSA stands for the "Organisation der ehemaligen SS-Angehörigen" (Organisation of Former SS Members), a secret network created towards the end of World War II to provide Nazi criminals with false documents, escape and infiltration into post-war German society. After reading the diary, which details Roschmann's horrific crimes, Miller begins a personal investigation to locate and bring the former SS man to justice. His search soon draws the attention of powerful and dangerous members of the ODESSA organization, who, under false identities, hold important positions in the post-war economy and politics of West Germany. To infiltrate the network itself, Miller collaborates with Israeli intelligence and the famous Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal. What begins as a journalistic story gradually develops into a deadly game of cat and mouse with global conspiracies and deeply personal motives that are revealed at the very end. Forsyth used his journalistic experience to create an extremely realistic thriller. Although experts later disputed the existence of a single organization called ODESSA, the book faithfully depicted the real problem of unpunished Nazis in post-war Germany.
