This is a novel by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, published in 2006. The book deals with the search for authenticity, the feminine side of divinity, and the courage to be different in a society that demands conformity. The protagonist is Athena (born Sherine Khalil). The story is not told from the perspective of the main character, but through the testimonies and interviews of people who knew her (mother, ex-husband, journalist, teacher). The main theme is "how to find the courage to be true to ourselves, even when we are not sure who we are?" Athena was born in Transylvania to a Roma mother, was left in an orphanage, and was later adopted by a wealthy Lebanese couple. We follow her life through various stages and locations: London: Where the family moves due to the war in Lebanon; there Athena marries young, gives birth to her son Viorel, and soon divorces. Spiritual Quest: Unsatisfied with her routine, Athena explores dance, calligraphy, and meditation to fill the "void" in her soul. Journey to Romania: She goes to search for her biological mother to understand her roots. The Origin of the "Witch": She develops the ability to prophesy and connect with the energy of the "Mother" (the feminine aspect of God), becoming a controversial spiritual leader in London. Main Themes and Motifs: The Feminine Divinity: Exploring the concept of the "Great Mother" and returning to the religion of the goddess. Dance and Calligraphy: Methods used by the characters to achieve a trance state and connect with their own being. Conflict with Tradition: Athena becomes the target of criticism from organized religion and society, who see her practices as dangerous or heretical. Interestingly, Coelho launched the project "The Experimental Witch" in which he invited readers to adapt chapters of the book into a film, further emphasizing the importance of different perspectives.Translated by Margaret Jull Costa.
