The book represents an important historical-documentary work translated into English by Krzysztof Drozdowski and Peter Martyn. The monograph provides exceptionally poignant, yet scientifically and archivally rigorously verified material about Poles who risked their own lives to save the Jewish population during the Nazi occupation. The content of the book is divided into three key parts. The first part provides reflections by the Israeli ambassador to Poland, texts on anniversary commemorations, and a historical overview of the work of the Council for Aid to Jews “Żegota” (1942–1945). The second part, titled “They Were Killed for the Help They Gave,” brings a list of names and testimonies about people who suffered mass executions and so-called pacifications of villages due to providing shelter to Jews. The third, extremely extensive part of the book contains the official list of the Righteous Among the Nations from the Yad Vashem Institute records, precisely categorized by country and ethnic origin. It is an exceptionally rare and valuable historiographical source, indispensable for anyone studying the history of World War II, the Holocaust, the sociology of war, and the fate of individuals in the vortex of Nazi crimes. This scarce copy is in like-new condition, exceptionally well-preserved with clean and unmarked pages.
