+ The Life of Sir Thomas More by William Roper. Utopia, published in 1516, is a foundational work of Western philosophy and literature. Written in Latin, it coined the word "utopia" (a pun on the Greek for "no place" and "good place") to describe a fictional island society governed by reason and communal justice. The book is a frame narrative divided into two parts: Book 1: A dialogue between More and the traveler Raphael Hythloday, who critiques the social and political corruption of 16th-century Europe, specifically addressing theft, poverty, and the greed of the nobility; Book 2: Hythloday’s detailed account of the island of Utopia, where he allegedly lived for five years. Thomas More's Utopia inspired centuries of political thought, from early socialist theories to modern dystopian fiction like George Orwell's 1984. More himself was eventually executed in 1535 for refusing to acknowledge Henry VIII as head of the Church of England, and he was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1935. Introduction and notes by Wayne A. Rebhorn. Translated by Ralph Robinson.
